Coproduction ARFI / D'Jazz Nevers Festival
With the support of La Fraternelle – Maison du Peuple in Saint-Claude.
In February 1964, Eric Dolphy gathered a few musicians and took advantage of an empty studio to record Out to Lunch in half a day. He then proceeded with a European tour in Mingus's quintet, followed by a date or two with Coltrane, before passing away in June of the same year. Needless to say, he never performed this repertoire live...
The compositions on this album and its structure don't adhere to the jazz norms of the time; but as is well known, neither does ARFI!
We chose to recreate the instrumental formation from the famous Out to Lunch album to bring it to the stage and give it the joy of live performances. In our effort to faithfully reproduce the album’s compositions, we wanted to go a step further by maintaining the orchestration of the original recording. For this reason, we selected musicians such as Mélissa Acchiardi (vibraphone), Christophe Gauvert (double bass), Guillaume Grenard (trumpet), Clément Gibert (alto saxophone, bass clarinet), and Christian Rollet (drums) to play these joyful and perplexing melodies, extend the music, and glide with the same vertigo through the delicate strands of improvisation.
